Lake Erie having many natural reefs and islands is a smallmouth bass fisherman's dream. Lake Erie offers some of the best smallmouth bass fishing on the Great Lakes. Not only does Lake Erie have large numbers of smallmouth but it also shows that it knows how to grow them with many fish caught in the 5 to 6 pound class.
It is pretty typical to catch anywhere from 30 to 60 fish a day when specifically targeting them. Smallmouth bass usually always jump out of the water after being hooked adding to the excitement. We catch smallmouth all across the western basin of Lake Erie from 5 foot of water all the way to 30 foot depending on the time of year.
Smallmouth bass can be caught anytime from May through October with the best months being August through October. Live Bait isn't necessary but helps when we anchor on the ledges of the reefs and shorelines. We typically use soft craws to catch smallmouth which we have to pre order to make sure we have them for fishing as they are a very popular bait.
When we run and gun for smallies, as locals call them, we will use salt tubes drifted across the reefs and shorelines to locate numbers of fish before anchoring and letting the smallmouth fun begin.
Live Bait Soft Craws are an additional $20 per person per trip
